The Pit River is the largest river in northeastern California and drains that section of the state and enters the Sacramento River at Shasta Lake. The north fork of the Pit starts at Goose Lake, while the south fork begins high in the Warner Mountains and they converge near Alturas, California. The river flows through large high mountain valleys and cuts its way through massive basalt flows to form incredible canyons that exhibit unusual geological formations that promote a variety of wildlife species unique to these landscapes.

Near Fall River Mills, California, adjacent to the river is the Pit River Campground, one of the most unique and aesthetic camping areas around. The campground offers sites with tables, fire rings, large pine/oak/locust trees, and a peace of mind. Some of the camp sites are next to the river, while others are associated with pine or oak trees. Fishing is available in the river as well as in several large reservoirs and lakes nearby. Bird watching is great with the variety of habitats around the campground: riparian, pine/oak woodlands, and upland brush lands. Hiking, sight-seeing, and mountain biking offer other opportunities in the vicinity.
